Arizona law requires that a minor seeking an abortion must have the consent of a parent or guardian. The law only requires one of your parents to give consent. On the day you come in, you and your parent or guardian must come to our clinic together. If your parent can’t come with you on the day of your procedure, the two of you may come in together on an earlier day so we may obtain consent. Both you and your parent must bring a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or a passport. If you do not have a government-issued photo ID, you must bring an original copy of your birth certificate. If you and your parent have different last names or different addresses, we will need to see documents that explain this such as a marriage license or divorce decree. When you call for your appointment, our staff will assist you in determining what documents are needed.

If you feel that you cannot obtain the consent of one of your parents to have an abortion, you may attempt to obtain a court order allowing you to have the abortion without parental consent. Our staff can assist you with this process. The forms necessary for this process are available in our office.

Abortions Are Legal in Arizona Up to 14 weeks and 6 days of Pregnancy

In Arizona, it is no longer legal for a doctor to perform an abortion after 14 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. Since the United Stated Supreme court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022, each state has its own laws regulating abortion. The closest place for most Arizona women to obtain an abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy is in Las Vegas, Nevada. Our sister clinic, Birth Control Care Center in Las Vegas is a 4 1/2 hour drive from central Phoenix or a 40-minute flight. You may contact Birth Control Care Center at 702-733-7889 or click here for more information.

Abortions for “Fetal Genetic Abnormalities” Are Banned in Arizona

In Arizona, it is illegal for a doctor to perform an abortion if they know that a woman is seeking an abortion only because of a genetic abnormality with the fetus, unless the abnormality is so severe that the baby could not survive after birth. Abortions for any reason are available at our sister clinic, Birth Control Care Center in Las Vegas. Please call 702-733-7889 or click here for more information.

Absolutely not. Our services are completely confidential and there is no requirement to inform your partner. It is your body and your choice.

Surgical Abortion FAQs

A surgical abortion is performed by a method called suction dilation and curettage (D&C). With this technique, the cervix is opened with dilators and suction is then used to empty the uterus. The entire procedure takes under 5 minutes.

If you are over 13 weeks, your doctor may recommend using a medication called misoprostol to help prepare your cervix for the procedure. You will be given the misoprostol soon after arriving in the clinic and will then wait 60 minutes to 3 hours for the medication to have its effect.

Surgical Abortion Follow-up Care

A follow-up visit is not required after a surgical abortion. However, if you would like to be seen simply to be reassured that everything is OK, we will be happy to see you at no cost. We are always available if you feel you might be having a problem after an abortion. There is never a charge for post-procedure care.

Most women experience some cramping during the procedure. If you choose to have IV sedation, you may fall asleep, or you may be awake and very relaxed. Many women who receive IV sedation tell us that they don’t remember anything about the surgery.

We recommend taking off the day of the procedure and the next day. Many women are ready to return to work on the day after the procedure. Some need a little bit longer to recover. If needed, we can provide you with letter for your employer. The letter, of course, will not reveal the nature of your care with us.

Patients who are 13 weeks pregnant or less should plan to be in our office for about 2 hours. If you are over 13 weeks, you may be in our clinic for up to 5 hours as your cervix is prepared for the procedure.

In order to respect the privacy and confidentiality of our patients and provide a secure environment, we can only allow patients and staff members in the procedure and recovery rooms.

Abortion Pill FAQs

After an ultrasound in our office and after the required waiting period, you will return to the office and will be given a medication called Mifepristone. This medication blocks the hormone progesterone. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down, stopping the pregnancy. You will be given another medication called Misoprostol which you will take 24-48 hours later. The Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy in a way similar to a miscarriage. You must then return to our office in 2 weeks to confirm that the pregnancy has ended.

General FAQs

Sometimes there are protesters outside our facility. If there are, they are not allowed on our private property, and therefore you should not have any direct contact with them. You do not need to talk to, engage with, or acknowledge these protesters. Security and Clinic Escorts may be present to assist you in getting to the office with minimal distractions.
